What to Pack for Birth

Leaving for the hospital or birth center is an exciting moment! Don’t wait to pack your bag until you’re in labor. There are only a few things you must bring, but a few simple items from can make you feel more at home in your birthing location. Most hospitals and birth centers provide most of what you need, however, you might want to bring your own versions.


Must have items

  • Car seat sized for a newborn and properly installed in your car

  • Cell phone and charger

  • Photo ID, and proof of insurance

  • Clothes for you and baby to go home in


For birthing person

  • Snacks and water bottle

  • Basic toiletries like a toothbrush and toothpaste, hair ties, lip balm, etc.

  • Clothes for labor and postpartum like a robe, nightgown, or other loose comfortable clothing and cozy socks or slippers.


  • If nursing, a nursing bra and shirt that opens in front

  • Things to create your desired environment such as pictures, essential oils, a playlist, flowers, etc.


For your partner

  • Layers and change of clothes

  • Swimsuit to support birther in shower/tub

  • Basic toiletries like a toothbrush and toothpaste, hair ties, lip balm, etc.

  • A way to time contractions (phone app, or pen/paper)


Other items to consider

  • Signs or outfits for baby announcement photo

  • Blanket and pillow for comfort and warmth

  • Any postpartum recovery items you want, but know that most birthing locations will provide everything needed
