As a doula, I provide continuous physical and emotional support, information, and advocacy during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. These are the “four pillars” of doula support. That looks different for every birthing person and family. This is not one-size-fits-all work!
Here are some examples of support I offer…
Physical
Massage or counter pressure
Changing positions
Giving food and drink
Setting up the room and adjusting lights, temperature, music, etc.
Assisting with tasks like going to the bathroom, changing clothes, moving locations, applying warm/cold packs
Emotional
Reassurance, encouragement, re-framing
Helping you feel in control and safe
Validating what you’re feeling
Keeping company
Continuous presence grounded in deep relationship
Debriefing after birth and listening with empathy
Information
Providing evidence-based information
Ensuring you understand what’s happening
Assisting with communication with your medical team
Suggesting techniques during labor
Offering referrals for lactation, physical therapy, and other services
Advocacy
Creating time/space for you to make decisions
Reminding you of your preferences, and helping communicate that to providers
Amplifying your voice
Coaching on communication techniques
Alerting care team to concerning symptoms
During prenatal meetings, we will discuss your particular birth goals, preferences, and what support YOU need from your doula. This list is just a few examples, but together we will create a support package that’s right for you.
